January is “Start a Business” Month and earlier this week we discussed “Why Start a Business?” which gave us 9 reasons why starting a business might be right for you and your family. Today I’d like to discuss some At Home Small Business Ideas you can start pretty quickly to bring in an extra income for your family. These are the general types of at home small businesses which can be kept small and generate a nice side income, or you can take them to the next level and create a big and highly profitable business out of them.
The reason I encourage mompreneurs to work from home are many, mostly because of the flexibility of being able to work from a computer in your house and create your own schedule. Also, because it’s really nice being able to rock your sweatpants and a messy bun on days when you don’t feel like getting all dressed up and commuting to an office. Like, right now it’s Sunday morning and I was inspired to write so I’m sitting at my desk in my robe and drinking coffee, while the family is enjoying their morning in the living room. There are definitely perks to having an at home small business!
There are many, many types of at home small business ideas out there, but today I’d like to discuss the basic types of small businesses you can start. This way you can get an idea of all the possibilities before I go into more detail later this month about specific business ideas.
Here’s the 3 types of At Home Small Business you can start:
A service based business is one of the more active types of businesses you can start at home. Services often allow you to get out there and mingle with the public, which can be nice if you are working mostly from home and don’t get to talk to too many people throughout the day. Services are also sustainable at home businesses because most likely the type of service you plan to offer will be needed for many years.

If you are a creative person and enjoy creating things, then selling a product might be a great at home small business idea for you! My first successful business included selling a variety of gluten free and vegan baking mixes, brownies, and cookies. I started small by making products in a local commercial kitchen, then eventually decided to grow the business and hire a co-packer manufacturer to create the products for me. This allowed me to expand my sales and distribution and offer my products around the world. This is an example of a small at home business idea that eventually became a big, successful business like I mentioned earlier. Selling products allows you to be able to expand globally with your business, versus a service based business which is limited to the amount of work you can do and the area you can do it in.

This type of work from home business can be the most financially rewarding with the least amount of effort if you have expertise in a specific area and have excellent writing and/or communicating skills. Informational products are the easiest to create because once you create the content the work is basically done. All that is left to do is promote your content and deposit money into your bank account.
There are many ways to offer informational products, one excellent example is this blog post you are reading. I have honed my business skills over the years and now have enough knowledge in this specific area to be able to share this information with my readers. I am able to earn an income through my “informational product” with Google Ads and Affiliate Marketing. In addition, I plan to write an eBook with more detailed information and will be able to sell that informational product as soon as its done via my blog.

When I was starting my first business I was a HUGE fan of Tim Ferris’ book The 4 Hour Work Week! I learned from him the idea of creating something to sell or offering a service to maximize profits and decrease the amount of time spent working. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to all my mompreneurs who are getting started in their own businesses and need some strategy behind their efforts.
As you can see, in these 3 types of at home small businesses there are many options you can choose from! Throughout the rest of January we will be going into further detail about how to start a work from home small business, what it takes, where to start and some ideas for getting your business off the ground!
