Today is an exciting day! Today is the very first Featured Mompreneurs Interview Post on the Mompreneur Advice Blog! I felt it was appropriate to have our very first Featured Mompreneur in January since it’s “Start a Business” Month on the blog!
Throughout 2016 I plan to interview a variety of awesome mompreneurs who are either starting their own businesses, or have been running their own successful businesses for years! I absolutely love hearing stories of success from mom’s who love business as much as I do.
Today we are featuring my interview with Cara, co-founder of Finer Things Box, a history-inspired subscription box which features an eclectic variety of artifacts, foods and decor from around the world!
Cara recently created the Finer Things Box with her sister. They both share a love for Travel, History and Learning and decided to create a business based on their passions. The ladies are excited to launch their first box this February!
Featured Mompreneur Interview
Here’s my interview with Cara where she dishes all about how she started her business, what inspired her and the tools she’s using to create a successful and sustainable business:
What is your business about?
My business is a subscription box service that brings history and travel to customer’s doorsteps. Each box delivered has a unique historical theme from around the world. Boxes include gourmet foods, home decor, bath and body products, and cultural gifts inspired by the monthly theme. I really strive to make each box feel like a t>
sensory experience that brings the past to life (check out her special Intro Discount Offer at the bottom of this post for 10% off your first box!)
What inspired you to start your business?
I have always loved subscription boxes as a customer and have been increasingly inspired by history as I get older. One day I was listening to one of my favorite history podcasts (Hardcore History by Dan Carlin) and the idea just hit me – time travel in a subscription box! Since then I partnered up with my sister and hit the ground running to bring this idea to life.
Do you have a business partner?
My sister is my business partner, and she is a great partner to have. Her background is in communications, e-commerce and library science, so not only does she share my love of history but also knows how to get our message out there!
Is this your first business?
This is my very first business, but most of my family have entrepreneurial spirits that have inspired me.
How many children did you have when you started your business?
I have an 11 month old daughter, Hanaa, and she was just 6 months old when I got started.
What is your favorite part about owning your own business?
I love being able to bring my vision to life and see it come to fruition. It’s been so rewarding to see my decisions making a difference, having the product come together and reaching customers.
What are some of the challenges you face as a mompreneur?
Time management, obviously to any mom, is a challenge. Especially as a new business there are so many little things that need my attention, it’s hard to get it all done as perfect as I would like.
What are some tools you use for your business?
I live on my MacBook Pro and iPhone. I use GIMP and Canva for free photo editing. Hootsuite for social media posting and automation. Mailchimp for e-mail marketing. Our website is hosted on Cratejoy, which handles all the billing and shipping infrastructure. (PS – I absolutely LOVE Canva and use it for all my post header images!)
How does your family support you in your business?
My husband and family have been super supportive in every way. There is almost always someone to babysit so I can get a few hours work in or go to a trade show.
What techniques have you used to grow your business?
I started with a free landing page built on LaunchRock and used social media to get some initial interest. I am still mostly using social media and have just started dabbling in some paid inexpensive advertising on Facebook.
What advice would you give to fellow mompreneurs?
I would say to mompreneurs everywhere, just go for it! Pick a business and niche that you really enjoy, and your passion will help get you through the hoops! Also, keep learning. I love reading articles and listening to podcasts about entrepreneurship.
What are some tips for mompreneurs juggling family life and tips businesses?
- To-do lists – no one can remember everything.
- Delegate – any tasks you can outsource to a business partner, freelancer or helpful soul in your family, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Family time – know when to turn off the computer and just enjoy your family.
