There are many obvious reasons to start a business (like making money!), but I believe it’s important to really think about this question before investing your time and money into a business adventure. Once you make the decision to start a business, you really do need to be all in or you won’t be nearly as successful as you’d like to be. If you are unable to commit to a big project (I like to think of a business as one big project) then you might want to consider getting a part-time job instead of committing to a business. However, if you are willing to commit fully and strategically to a business idea you have, your success will happen in financial returns and/or learning lessons which are both very, very valuable.
So, without further adieu…
9 reasons you should start a business:
1. Be Your Own Boss
When you have your own business you get to be your own boss which means you don’t have to live by someone else’s rules and deal with someone you really don’t like. Hopefully you’ll be a good boss for yourself and give yourself the push you need to succeed and the vacation time you want when you want it.
2. Have your own schedule
When you have your own business you get to determine your own work schedule. The amount of effort you put into your business is what you get out of your business, so realistically you’ll want to be putting in as much time and effort as you can. The perk to having your own schedule means, when your family comes home at the end of the day you’ll be able to finish up your work day and join in the evening activities with them. This is one of the main reasons I prefer to own my own business because family time is the most important time to me.
3. Determine how much money you’d like to be making
When you own your own business you get to determine how much money you would like to be making. Like I mentioned above, the time you put into your business directly correlates to the amount of money you make. This doesn’t mean you are going to for sure make a certain amount of money per hour, but it does mean the possibilities of income are unlimited as opposed to working for an hourly wage or salary. Being able to determine how much money you want to bring in for your family is really exciting and one of the reasons I get really excited to work on my businesses!
4. Having the time to do the things in life you want to do
Time is the only fixed asset we have and is the most valuable. Owning your own business means, when time allows, you can take a break and go for a jog when you want, go to the beach, or even sit down and watch your favorite soap opera. Being able to create your own schedule is such a great perk of owning your own business because it allows you the opportunity to work AND enjoy your life. Priceless.
5. Work from home
Working from home is soooooooooo awesome. Being able to turn on my computer and start working at whatever hour I want to means no more commuting, no more having to dress up every single day, and the ability to work whenever you want at whatever pace you want. Sometimes I’ll work for an hour or two after I put my daughter to bed which helps me break up my day and gives me time to exercise and relax during the day. I wouldn’t be able to do this if I worked a 9-5 job 5 days per week.
6. Feel empowered
Being able to generate my own income without relying on someone else or another company makes me feel unbelievably empowered. It’s like making money out of thin air sometimes! I also feel very empowered being able to tell others I am a successful entrepreneur and have built a International Food Business from scratch. Watching people’s faces when I tell them this is really the most exciting part because it’s usually the last thing they are expecting to hear from little ole’ me. It’s also very empowering to know I can control my own destiny with my business expertise and that I’ll always have the opportunity to make money as long as I have a working computer and my smarts.
7. Be excited about the work you do
Starting a business is so exciting! Like I mentioned earlier, I really enjoy thinking about my businesses as projects which are always the fun type of work to do. When you think about your business as a project it makes every little bit you do an important pieces of the puzzle that will lead you to financial freedom! And this is so incredibly exciting.
8. Determine your destiny
Owning your own business lets you determine your own destiny because your future isn’t reliant on the welfare of your employer. It also allows you flexibility if your business is having trouble because you can pull yourself out of hole much easier then relying on your employer to pull your job out of a hole.
9. Earn money while you sleep
Lastly, when you start a business you are enabling yourself the possibility of earning money while you sleep if you sell a product or service on the internet. This means your business can be open 24/7 and all you have to do is maintain it, update it, and process your orders. How exciting is that?
